About the Item

An exceptional and authentic Louis XVI period guéridon table, handcrafted in France circa 1780. The circular breccia marble top encircled by a finely pierced gilt-bronze gallery rests on a mahogany frame enriched with detailed ormolu mounts and classical motifs. The apron is fitted with four discreet pull out drawers — two “tea trays” and two drawers — each with original neoclassical brass escutcheons and beaded molding. Raised on fluted tapering legs with ornate gilt-bronze collars and sabots, this piece embodies the refined elegance of the Louis XVI aesthetic—balanced proportions, architectural geometry, and restrained ornamentation. A notable feature is the presence of carved Roman numeral batch numbers on the underside of the drawers, and the faint remnants of the original atelier’s stamp. These details are not only typical of 18th-century French , but further suggest that the table was produced in a notable Parisian workshop that followed guild standards of the Ancien Régime, prior to the Revolutionary reforms that dissolved the guild system. Originally used as a side or occasional table in aristocratic salons, guéridons like this bridged functionality and ornament, and were precursors to later Empire and Directoire innovations.
