Late 19th Century Transition Louis XV Style Gueridon in Marble with Two Tiers

About the Item

We present you this exquisite double-tiered Carrara marble gueridon in the Transition style of Louis XV. It is lavishly adorned with gilded bronze foliage ornamentation. The marble top is engirdled by a gilded bronze gallery and features a central drawer. The entire circumference of the table is ornately decorated with gilded bronzes including the cabriole legs, and the feet, with monkey hoof motifs, are in oak. This piece is a Parisian creation from a workshop of the esteemed Faubourg Saint-Antoine suburb in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is ideal for use as an occasional table in a living room, situated between two armchairs where coffee or other beverages can be served. The Faubourg Saint Antoine, a district in eastern Paris, has a long and storied history as a hub for cabinetmaking workshops. Cabinetmaking in the Faubourg Saint Antoine dates back to the 17th century when craftsmen specialising in woodworking, including cabinetmaking, began to settle in the area. The district's proximity to the Seine River and the royal court in central Paris contributed to its growth as an artisanal centre. Finally, the artisans of Faubourg Saint Antoine earned royal favour, particularly during the reign of Louis XIV. They supplied furniture for the lavish interiors of Versailles and other royal residences. The cabinetmakers of Faubourg Saint Antoine were known for their skilled craftsmanship as produced high-quality, handcrafted furniture that often featured intricate marquetry, gilding, and carving. Some cabinetmakers in the Faubourg Saint Antoine have continued the legacy, producing fine handcrafted pieces that are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.
