Victorian Marquetry Oval Table Attributed to Collinson and Lock, circa 1880
About the Item
A Victorian marquetry inlaid oval table with an inlaid Ashford marble top, attributed to Collinson and Lock.
English, circa 1880.
The firm of Collinson & Lock was established in London in the third quarter of the Nineteenth century with the partnership of F.G. Collinson and G.J. Lock, former employees of Jackson & Graham.
The company quickly achieved both commercial success and a leading position in the field of design. Influential designers of the 'Art Movement' including: T.E.Collcutt, J Moyr-Smith and Stephen Webb were employed by the company and E.W. Godwin was held on a retainer to produce exclusive designs for the company from 1872 to 1874.
In 1871 the firm issued an impressive illustrated catalogue of 'Artistic Furniture', with plates by J. Moyr-Smith, assistant to Christopher Dresser, and in 1873 was trading from extensive newly built premises in St Bride Street.
As well as providing furniture for important commissions such as the Law Courts and the Savoy Theatre, they exhibited at many of the International Exhibitions of the period. At the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878, they exhibited a number of items designed by E. W. Godwin.
In 1897, the firm was taken over by Gillows, but continued to produce furniture of this type for several years.
Ashford Black Marble is a highly polished jet black bituminous limestone mined in Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire.
During the 19th century inlaid furniture and objects using this stone became very popular and a sizeable industry grew up centred around the towns of Buxton and Ashford. Highly skilled stonemasons created intricate and accomplished designs often using semi-precious stones and imported marbles, drawing their inspiration from Florentine Pietre Dure.

George IV Centre Table Attributed to Thomas & George Seddon, circa 1830
By Thomas & George Seddon
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Very Fine George IV Parcel-Gilt Amboyna Centre Table Attributed to Thomas & George Seddon.
English, Circa 1830.
The table is of finely figured Amboyna with a circular tilt-top above a triform column with parcel-gilt scrolled supports. It is raised on a conforming plinth base with foliate carved feet and concealed castors.
George Seddon was the eighth child of John Seddon of Blakelea, Lancashire. His father apprenticed him to George Clemaphon of Cripplegate to learn cabinet making. He became a master cabinet maker. (He was Master of the Joiner’s Company in 1795).
In the early 1750s he was sufficiently successful to acquire London House, Aldersgate Street. It consisted of extensive workshops, where furniture was made, and showrooms to display the finished products. London House had formerly been a palace of the Bishops of London. The panelled state-rooms were ideal for the display of fashionable furniture; and the chapel and library made convenient workshops. When Seddon married, he converted the garden house and infirmary into the family home. Seddon was the biggest furniture maker of his time. His furniture store covered a two acre site in Aldersgate Street.
His workshop there was described by London visitor Sophie v. La Roche in 1786:
"We drove first to Mr. Seddon's, a cabinet-maker,...He employs four hundred apprentices on any work connected with the making of household furniture—joiners, carvers, gilders...

"Pagoda" table, Attributed to G. Viardot, France, Circa 1880
By Gabriel Viardot
Located in PARIS, FR
Charming Japanese-inspired « pagoda » table in tinted and carved wood attributed to G. Viardot. The rectangular top rests on four slightly curved legs adorned with openwork and sculpted geometric interlacing, joined by an engraved stretcher with a stylized cutout.
Gabriel Viardot career began as a wood carver and he produced small furniture, sculpturally carved with naturalistic motifs and animals. In the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris, his finely sculpted objects were well received. However, with the increasing importation of similarly produced Swiss and German articles, he found less opportunity for these and decided to innovate. G. Viardot succeeded to his father's business in 1861 installed rue Rambuteau in Paris. Around 1870 he turned to the idea of producing « Meubles genre Chinois et Japonais ». The taste in Europe for exotic furniture, incorporating sometimes authentic Chinese or Japanese objects...
