Gianfranco Frattini (1926–2004) was an influential Italian architect and designer, known for his significant contributions to mid-century modern design. He was part of the Italian design movement in the post-war period, working closely with some of the biggest names in design and architecture. Career and Style: Frattini graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1953, where he studied architecture. His design style blended sleek, functional forms with a refined attention to detail. He focused on creating objects and spaces that emphasized craftsmanship, and he often collaborated with highly skilled artisans. Frattini's work spanned furniture, lighting, and interior design. He frequently collaborated with Cesare Cassina and worked with lighting manufacturer Arteluce. His pieces are known for being functional, elegant, and innovative. Notable Collaborations and Designs: Partnership with Cesare Cassina: Frattini collaborated with Cassina, one of the most important furniture makers in Italy, on various designs. He is well known for his use of wood and fine craftsmanship. Collaboration with Pierluigi Ghianda: Frattini often worked with Ghianda, a master cabinetmaker, which led to some of his best-known wood furniture designs. One of the notable examples of this partnership is the 817 'President' desk. Boalum Lamp (1970): Designed with Livio Castiglioni, the Boalum lamp is one of Frattini's most iconic designs. Its flexible, modular form allows users to shape it according to their needs, and it’s often considered a symbol of the 1970s. Frattini’s Legacy: Frattini's designs are now considered timeless pieces of mid-century modernism, blending functionality with an appreciation for Italian craftsmanship. Many of his works are still produced today and are highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts.
