Pair of French Vintage Mid-Century Modern Iron Nesting Tables ca. 1940-50

About the Item

PAIR OF FRENCH MODERNE GILT AND PATINATED IRON NESTING TABLES Circa 1940-50, unmarked 20 1/4" H x 16 3/4" D x 28 7/8" W [larger] 16 1/8" H x 16 5/8" D x 21 1/2" W [smaller] Executed in patinated iron with gilt detailing, this sleek pair of nesting tables are defined by their stark geometry and artisanal metalwork. There is a juxtaposition between the refined and the raw, with nearly unimproved iron legs in one unbroken arch against crystal clear glass and finely cast gilt elements. The tapering legs are joined by delicate crossing stretchers on either side while twisted rope terminating in tassels on either end run along the edges of the glass tops. The feet terminate in unusual gilt sabots. The structural balance and decorative clarity align with the design vocabulary of Maison Ramsay, Maison Jansen and related ateliers working in Paris during the 1940s–50s, where forged iron was elevated through classical restraint and decorative precision. An unusual and remarkable pair. Condition: Two gilt iron caps are replaced with polychromed brass caps of a slightly different hue. Light scuffs and use indicators to the glass. Minor wear and rubbing to gilding throughout revealing the red underlayer. Ready to place. ref. 503HPE10A About silla antiques & art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry. French Modernist Gilded Wrought-Iron & Glass Coffee Accent Table ca. 1950s
Located in Shippensburg, PA
MODERNIST GILDED WROUGHT-IRON AND GLASS COFFEE TABLE French, circa 1950s unmarked Item # 401RGG02P-1 An endlessly interesting modernist accent table from the 1950s, it works perfectly both as a side table beside a low sofa or chair or as a coffee or cocktail table. The diminutive stature of the table allows it to be a part of the room without dominating at all, adding texture and visual interest with the brilliantly textured gilt patina while having a great deal of negative space that makes the table feel light, airy and relaxed. The 3/8" thick (and brand new) glass top is set into tiny grooves in the legs, each with a single twisted iron ring hanging from the top with a gentle curved profile that terminates in a stubbed sabot. Ready to place. We acquired this together with a matched pair to this that is almost identical in size but is a simple black patination instead of having the gilt surface on the wrought iron; contact us if you would like to know about the other table. Measurements: 19 1/8" H x 29 5/8" diameter Condition Report: Glass is brand new 3/8" thick tempered clear glass; table in very good condition, light wear to gilding and overall patina in a few spots, incredibly sturdy and solid. A fine ready-to-place presentation. About silla antiques...
