About the Item

Early 19th Century Regency Mahogany Horseshoe “Hunt” or “Wine” Table, Attributed to Gillows, Set Consisting of two pieces, the adjustable horseshoe table and the removable centerboard A superb early 19th-century Regency period figured mahogany “social” or “wine” table, also known as a hunt table, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. Of elegant horseshoe form with a reeded edge, the table retains its original removable center leaf, allowing for a versatile arrangement. Each end is fitted with 10" x 10" drop shelves, enabling the table to contract to a narrower depth when closed. The whole is raised on finely reeded and turned tapering legs, terminating in the original large pierced brass castors. This rare form was designed to facilitate convivial gatherings. Known as wine or hunt tables, they were used for serving decanters, glasses, and refreshments, their crescent form encouraging conversation and leaving space for service within the open center. The design was also popular for dessert presentation, often wheeled into drawing rooms or libraries following dinner. The quality of construction, refined proportions, and survival of original fittings strongly suggest the work of Gillows, one of Regency England’s most celebrated cabinetmakers. Today, the table serves equally well as a dramatic console, serving piece, or bar table, its elegant horseshoe shape and social history enhancing both function and style. Measurements: Open without leaf: 58" W x 38" D x 28.75" H Closed with drops: 26" D Removable leaf: 19" / expands to 37" With shelf: 58" W x 29" D x 28.75" H Form & Materials: Made of figured mahogany, with a reeded edge and a rare horseshoe or crescent shape. The table retains its original removable center leaf, allowing it to be adjusted for different service arrangements. The drop shelves at each end (10" x 10") provide extra serving areas, while the shaped rim creates a continuous surface for glasses and bottles. Legs: Supported on reeded and turned tapering legs, elegant yet strong, ending in their original large pierced brass castors—a hallmark of Gillows craftsmanship. Uses & Function: Wine & Hunt Table: These tables were designed for social drinking rituals, allowing bottles and glasses to be placed within reach of gentlemen seated around the curved form. The horseshoe shape encouraged convivial conversation, while servants could easily replenish bottles from the open center. Dining & Dessert Service: The design also functioned as a dessert table, presenting fruit, sweetmeats, and decanters after dinner. The removable leaf expanded the table for additional serving needs. Hunt Breakfasts: Known as hunt tables, they were sometimes wheeled into libraries or halls for hunt breakfasts or late suppers, where drinks, joints of meat, and accompaniments were served informally. Modern Use: Today, such tables are highly versatile. They can serve as a unique dining table, console, or bar table, and their elegant form makes them perfect for entertaining spaces. Attribution: The high quality of construction and design details, especially the reeded legs and castors, strongly suggests Gillows of Lancaster or London, one of the most prestigious English cabinetmaking firms of the late Georgian and Regency era.
