Branco & Preto Brazilian Mid-Century Modern side table with glass top set in Caviuna wood frame. 21.5" H x 25.5" W x 25.5" D. Listing is for single table.
Caviuna is a Brazilian timber tree yielding a heavy, hard dark-coloured wood streaked with black. Table features glass top effortlessly embedded in the wooden frame. Gorgeous sculptural rectangular recessed legs. The strong lines and masterful proportions, sculptural yet unassuming - effortlessly stylish. Made by Luiz Pássaro, noted mid-century São Paolo woodworkers who often worked with designers from the Branco & Preto effort.
About Branco e Preto:
In the Provincial of São Paulo of the 1950s, a group of architects consisting of Roberta Aflalo, Jacob Ruchti, Miguel Forte, Plínio Croce, Carlos Millan and Chen Y Hwa, got together to create a furniture shop that could cater to their modern and sophisticated view of architecture and house their designs. After graduating with degrees in architecture at The Mackenzie School of Engineering, they needed furniture suitable for the architecture style they practiced. As a group of friends they rallied around an IDEA advanced by Roberto Aflalo to open a store that sold pieces of modern design furniture. In 1952, they founded Branco & Preto to address their need to furnish the houses commissioned to them with an innovative style. They decided upon the name ‘Branco e Preto’ (White and Black), colours that would often be featured in their fabrics made especially for the store by the Lanfício Fileppo.
The São Paulo-based shop rapidly became a reference for architects, who would visit to become familiar with the trends and discuss the pieces that broke with the traditional, stout lines that were used until then. With its high prices and focus on the elite of São Paulo, the store often catered to customers who had their homes specifically created by one of the group's architects and the furniture was often designed or adapted with a specific residence in mind. Brazilian woods were combined with glass, iron and calacatta marble. Like many Brazilian furniture brands, it never had Industrial Production and as a result everything was made by hand. Branco e Preto remained open until 1970, and during its existence, the collective created pieces of furniture that inspire Brazilian designers to this day.

Branco & Preto
Six young architects joined forces in the 1950s to create Branco & Preto in São Paulo. Together, they created high-end modern furniture inspired by the spirited reinvigoration of art and architecture in Brazil.
The six founders — Miguel Forte, Jacob Ruchti, Plínio Croce, Roberto Aflalo, Carlos Millan and Chen Y Hwa — all attended Mackenzie Architecture University, a school led by architect and modernist critic Cristiano Stockler das Neves who prioritized neoclassicism. As progressive students, the founders rebelled against this status quo in their work.
During the 1950s, there were few designers of modern furniture based in Brazil aside from Brazilian furniture firm Mòveis Artisticos Z and Portuguese-born furniture designer Joaquim Tenreiro. Branco & Preto helped fill a wide gap in the market.
Brazilian modernist pioneers Rino Levi and Gregori Warchavchik were important early connections. Through them, Ruchti and Forte met American architect Philip Johnson and German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; meanwhile, Croce, Alfalo and Millan drew inspiration from the works of Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra and Hungarian-American architect and furniture designer Marcel Breuer.
As a proponent of “Rio modernism,” Branco & Preto often combined glass, iron and calacatta marble with Brazilian woods like jacaranda and caviuna to make its handcrafted furnishings. Free from plywood and screws, this furniture required the expertise of skilled woodworkers, especially for the MF5 armchair and slatted coffee table. Both designed by Millan, they are among Branco & Preto’s most recognized works.

Bennett sought to create a design style that was uniquely American, versus the popular European design styles of the 1960s and 70's. His style was called "sensual minimalism" for his blending of industrial design and aesthetic look. He is considered one of the first designers to use industrial design and the industrial aesthetic in home design. Hailed by the American Institute of Architects, Bennett is credited as an American pioneer in the use of industrial materials for home furnishings – a prime example being his early ’60s I Beam Table, which employs a section of beam for a base.
Ward Bennett’s career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in New York’s Garment District. At 16 he went to Europe and continued working in fashion.
Despite attending art schools in Florence and Paris, he was mostly self-taught, with skills ranging from jewelry-making to interior design. “I learn from people,” he said, referencing influences including Georgia O’Keeffe.
