A very smart early 19th century side or writing table of excellent golden colour and patination, attributable to Gillows of Lancaster and London and branded with 'S' under an Earl's coronet, the insignia of the Earls Spencers. English, circa 1820. Why we like it We love the elegant simplicity of this table, its slender design and splendid colour and patina - a highly desirable and sought after attributes. Tables of similar design and quality were sold from Althorp, the seat of the Earl Spencer, at Christies London, The Althorp Attic Sale, 8 July 2010.

A number of related side tables in mahogany, attributed to ‘The Dumfries House Cabinet-Maker’, possibly Thomas Chippendale, was supplied circa 1760 to Lord Dumfries at Dumfries House, Scotland (illustrated).
