About the Item

Antique (19th century) French gilt bronze and electroplate ewer and basin on tripod stand in the Roman neoclassical style, exceptionally cast after the original model by the 16th century French Mannerist sculptor, Francois Briot (1550-c1615). 42 inch total height and basin height of 32 1/4 inches. Basin 17 3/4 in diameter. The basin depicts Temperance seated at center with the Latin inscription TEMPE RANTIA surrounded by lovely arabesques and classical figures and figural roundels symbolizing the seven liberal arts and sciences.
