French 19th Century Renaissance Style Patinated Bronze Tazza Designed Side Table

About the Item

A very handsome French 19th century Renaissance St. patinated bronze tazza-designed side table, signed E. Picault, Salon 1867. Raised on ormolu topie shaped feet below a triangular concave-sided black Belgian marble base. Patinated bronze supports with paw feet topped by satyr busts, accented with ormolu mounts and joined by X stretchers. The circular ormolu frieze is decorated with patinated bronze rings and borders. All below the wonderful patinated bronze tazza top depicting mythological scenes of Orpheus. Orpheus is a legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greek mythology. The stories about him are centered on his ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music. It was said that while Hermes had invented the lyre, Orpheus had perfected it. Émile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a renowned French sculptor and Bronzier, best known for works depicting allegorical subjects, and mythological heroes. Picault was a very prolific artist, and began to show his artwork at the Salon, beginning in 1863. The Salon, started in 1667, was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1748 and 1890 it was arguably the greatest annual art event in the Western world.
