Lion of Saint Mark Carved Oak Table, circa 1890
About the Item
Hand-carved from European oak, this handsome table features a carved scalloped top raised on four turned legs with side carvings uniting the side legs. The lower legs are joined by a curved X stretcher. At the center of the stretcher sits the focal point of the piece, a carved winged lion holding an open book with his left foreleg. Inscribed on the book are the words "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEVS" meaning "Peace unto you, Mark, my Evangelist." The winged lion is the living creature representing the evangelist Saint Mark from the Tetramorph, the symbolic arrangement of the four evangelist from Ezekiel in correlation with the four gospels. The final photo shows the carving on the interior side pieces.
