This table is inspired by the forms and sensibilities of Shaker furniture. In all Shaker communities, everything created was made to be used and sometimes the same item was used for various different tasks. Here, artist Jim Rose puts his spin on the shaker table by using naturally rusted steel. This highly versatile table will add interest and functionality to any room. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. c. 1960s, USA, a rare pair of Harvey Probber corner tables with Macassar ebony veneer tops and dark stained tapering round wood legs. The triangular tables have a curved longside edge. The tables are unmarked and likely a custom order. Harvey Probber (1922-2003) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and designed his first sofa at age 16, selling it for $10. By the time he finished high school, he was selling sketches of furniture to companies in Manhattan. Probber was an autodidact, having very little formal training at a time when most designers had formal architectural or art degrees. He did, however, take a few night classes at Pratt Institute and had on- the-job training in furniture production while working for Trade Upholstery. After serving in the Coast Guard during the 1940s, Probber worked briefly as a cabaret singer, but by 1945 he had opened Harvey Probber, Inc. Measures: 74.3 x 80 x 80 cm In good original condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) she was born in Paris in 1903 and attended the E´cole de l'Union centrale des Arts de´coratifs from 1920-1925. Charlotte Perriand designed furniture made of anodized aluminium and chromium-plated steel, showing it at the 1927 "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. After meeting Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand worked with him and Pierre Jeanneret until 1937. The revolutionary tubular steel furnishings and system furniture designed by the three were presented as "E´quipement de l'habitation" (home equipment) at the 1929 "Salon d'Automne," where they were widely acclaimed. In 1930 the Union Des Artistes Modernes (UAM) was founded in Paris, a group that viewed itself as a countermovement challenging such establishment organizations as the "Salon d'Automne" and also advocated Art Deco and Modernism. From 1931 Charlotte Perriand showed her own work solo there.
