Napoleon III Style French Sail Table In Papier Machè and Solid Wood
About the Item
Beautiful french sailing table in Papier Machè.The upper part is formed by an octagonal top, made in papier machè, on which has been admirably hand painted a detailed and colorful floral composition. At top has been added a wonderful perforated border, also made in papier machè, enriched by wonderful decorations in pure gold. Very particular is the leg in solid lacquered wood, worked in an excellent manner with patterns that connect in an elegant and harmonious way, from it branch off three curved feet, the whole is adorned with elaborate decorations in pure gold. Very practical is the sail top, (system invented in England in the Victorian period) that can be positioned vertically where you need more space.
The coffee table was made by skilled Master Craftsmen in the Napoleon III style in a Paris workshop between 1880 and 1883.
The technique of "papier maché" (mixture of paper and natural glues) is known in China since 200 B.C. (Han dynasty), spreading then all over the East; papier maché was used to build helmets, shields, ceremonial masks, boxes and other decorative objects; in Europe it appeared around 1725 and very soon this technique spread in the various European countries for the production of valuable artistic and ornamental works, in fact in no other material we have seen and see applied so many decorative techniques as in this, where the lacquering, the patination, the gilding and the most refined paintings have their greatest expression. The reliability of papier maché creations is greater than we can imagine; objects made 300/400 years ago have reached us in excellent condition! Papier maché had its greatest use from the 16th to the 20th century, particularly in France and Russia. In the reigning period of Napoleon III (1852-1870) there is a real revival of past styles such as the first empire, but the eclecticism that characterized the period, made it more graceful, refined and elegant by inserting neo-gothic, neo-renaissance and oriental elements; our coffee table belongs precisely to this aesthetic current. The coffee table is in excellent condition, only in some parts the pure gold appears worn, but this makes the object much more fascinating and historically interesting. Measures diameter cm.58, height cm.69.For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
