About the Item

Paul Evans Studio Argente PE-37 Cube Tables – Pair Commanding in form and masterful in execution, this rare pair of Paul Evans Studio Argente series cube tables (Model PE-37) exemplifies the American studio furniture movement at its expressive best. Produced circa 1970 for Directional, each sculptural cube is clad in hand-welded aluminum and incised with extraordinarily intricate sgraffito detailing—an artful dance of texture and pattern that elevates surface into sculpture. These tables retain their original slate tops, contrasting beautifully with the luminous patinated metalwork below. The play of light across the layered etching lends the pieces a dynamic, almost kinetic energy—typical of Evans’ groundbreaking experimentation in form and surface. * Dimensions: 16 1/4 in H × 15¾ in W × 15¾ in D * Condition: Very good original condition; slate tops show minimal wear, consistent with age * Provenance: Private Collection Texas * Literature: Featured in Paul Evans: Crossing Boundaries and Crafting Modernism (Kimmerle, et al.) Evans once said of his aluminum work: "This is a whole new approach... this metal has a great future because it fits with the mood and designs for many of today's architects." These PE-37 cubes are a quintessential embodiment of that vision—a fusion of brutalism, craftsmanship, and timeless modern design.
