About the Item

Danish Midcentury ‘Minerva’ Side Table by Hvidt & Mølgaard-Nielsen for France & Søn, 1950s Stamped, Teak and Rattan Two-Tier Corner Table with Architectural Form A sculptural and highly refined two-tier side or corner table designed by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for France & Søn, Denmark, in the 1950s. Known informally as the ‘Minerva’ table, this elegant piece balances bold geometry with refined materials. The asymmetric top, crafted from solid teak with sculpted rounded corners, floats lightly above a lower square shelf made of woven cane. The clean, tapering legs and precise joinery reflect the Danish commitment to form as function. Both light and structurally sound, it is ideal as a sofa end, occasional table, or reading corner companion—equally at home in modernist and classical interiors. Designers: Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen Hvidt & Mølgaard were among the most important and forward-thinking furniture designers in midcentury Denmark. Their studio, founded in 1944, was one of the earliest to unite the Danish cabinetmaking tradition with modern production techniques. They pioneered the use of laminated wood in Danish design and were early advocates for flat-packable, modular furniture—a radical concept at the time. Key works by Hvidt & Mølgaard are held in the permanent collections of: • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York — including their iconic Portex chair • Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen • Vitra Design Museum, Germany • The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne The duo’s work has featured in major retrospectives of Danish Modernism and is increasingly recognised for its innovation, clarity and enduring craftsmanship. Maker: France & Søn One of the most prolific and quality-focused manufacturers of the 1950s and 60s, France & Søn was known for its exceptional construction standards and international reach. Originally founded by Charles France and Eric Daverkosen (as France & Daverkosen), the company rebranded as France & Søn in the mid-1950s and became a key exporter of Danish design. Their collaborative model attracted many of Denmark’s greatest designers, including: • Finn Juhl • Grete Jalk • Ole Wanscher • Arne Vodder • Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen This table bears the original round maker’s medallion inlaid beneath—an assurance of authenticity and production pedigree. — Details • Designer: Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen • Maker: France & Søn • Origin: Denmark, c. 1950s • Materials: Solid teak top, woven cane lower tier • Marked: Stamped with France & Søn medallion • Provenance: Private Scandinavian collection • Condition: Excellent vintage with gentle signs of age — Follow our page for original Danish modern and curated 20th century design.
