Antique 18th Century Square Walnut Swiss Renaissance Banker or Merchant Table
About the Item
A beautiful bankers or merchants table that was made in Switzerland around 1750. The table has a square 1.57 inch thick top made in solid walnut. The planks were joined by steel S-shaped interconnectors visible on the sides. The table stands on lyre-shaped legs connected by stretchers and has two drawers with recessed panels. This is a typical banker's table given its size and the drawers that slide both ways. The size was to create a certain distance between the person paying and the recipient. The payment would go in the drawer and then the drawer would slide towards the recipient. The money was put in the drawer so the amount being paid was private.
The table has a very solid construction that made it possible to be moved around a lot. The table is still in very good and authentic condition. The tale shows many marks of use and also some wormholes. There were no signs of active woodworm, but the whole piece was treated professionally anyway.
The table was stained, lacquered, and finished with wax. The many years of intensive use and waxing led to a great patina. The table was gently cleaned in our atelier and a new protective wax layer was applied. The table makes a great center table and it is ready for use.
