About the Item

An Extremely Elegant Early 19th Century, French Empire Period, Mahogany Tricoteuse Type Occasional Table, Having Extremely Well Figured Rectangular Galleried Top, Over One Drawer To Frieze With Later Brass Knobs, Raised On Elegant Lyre Design End Supports And Four Sabre Legs United By Cross Stretcher With Brass Ball Feet. Tricoteuse is the French nickname for women who used to sit knitting whilst attending public executions during the French revolution and therefore it is natural that designs of table like this and similar which they used for making it easy to place their work without the worry of a fall damaging it is commonly known as a tricoteuse table. These tables can generally be found in a very wide range of sizes, qualities and wood finishes and this particular example is one of the better quality, nicer ones you will find. Of course from a modern day living, practical perspective this makes a perfect little lamp table, or occasional table, with a nice steady top that can be used for placing items on with a lessened risk of them being knocked over, whilst also retaining real elegance and sophistication. The quality of construction is good with nice decorative mahogany veneers in place which have aged nicely and now boast a good rich colour. The brass lyre ends are a nice touch and elevate the piece above many others. The brass knobs to the drawer are later additions but sit well on the table and overall the condition is very good with just a few old blemishes which have now blended into the surface as one would expect on an item of this age. As with all items which we offer for sale this table has been inspected by and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home. Circa 1820. Height 27.5in. Width 18.5in. Depth 13in. Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
