About the Item

This French Art Nouveau bronze pin tray by Gustav Gurschner titled “Symbolist Reverie” depicts the face of a sleeping maiden wearing a diadem. Her long, flowing hair swirls before her relaxed, sleep-like visage to create the tray. The headpiece she wears bears a singular red stone in the center of her forehead. The woman’s dream-like state is referred to in the title as the reverie, which is the French for the phenomenon of daydreaming. The woman in reverie is a famous Art Nouveau trope, most notably produced in lithograph by Alphonse Mucha’s “Reverie,” created in 1897. Item #: YS-20970 Artist: Gustav Gurschner Country: France Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 3.5" height, 5.5" width, 8.5" depth. Materials: Patinated Bronze Signed: ''GURSCHNER'' Literature: Art Nouveau Sculpture by Alastair Duncan, p. 49, and in The Paris Salons 1895-1914, vol. 5 by Alastair Duncan, p. 305. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: This design by Gustav Gurschner was created for La Maison Moderne, the Montmartre home purchased by Spanish Ramon Pichot Gironès in 1905. The Catalan and Spanish artist was a close friend of Pablo Picasso and an influence on the young Salvador Dalí whom Gironès met when the surrealist was only ten years old. This bronze tray not only carries a famous Art Nouveau Motif but also the legacy of a generation of master artists.
