Louis XVI Men's Dressing Table In Cuban Mahogany Stamped Jean-frederic Ratié In

About the Item

Jean-Frederic Ratié (1755-1838) - Parisian cabinetmaker, was admitted to the mastery on July 15, 1783. Sober and elegant, this men's dressing table made of Cuban mahogany will delight collectors and lovers of Louis XVI or even Directoire interiors. On an oak frame, it opens three drawers on the front, the top when folded down reveals a beautiful white Carrara marble and presents a mirror in the grove. Veneered on all sides and french polish, it is mounted on four circular and tapered legs finished with beautiful all-brass casters. Stamped F. RATIE on the front crosspiece under the flap. Jean Frédéric Ratié, born in Hanover, obtained his mastery in 1783. He settled on rue de Cotte then rue Lenoir in the Faubourg Saint Antoine. In 1801, under the Directory, he moved to Rue de la Cerisaie where he worked until 1819. His furniture, secretaries, backgammon tables, chests of drawers, bonheurs-du-jour, etc., with their very sober lines, are all in the late Louis XVI style. They are made mainly of light mahogany. For the ornamentation and gilding, Ratié called upon a certain Gérard, a metal gilder, based on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. In 1791, he worked for the Garde Meuble de la Couronne, which commissioned three chests of drawers for the Château de Saint-Cloud.
