Antique large cloisonné enamel wall crucifix with font French, Late 19th Century Height 57cm, width 33cm, depth 7cm This superb decorative cross is designed to hang on a wall, enabled by the small clover-shaped gilt metal handle which surmounts the top. The cross is shaped as a traditional Christian budded crucifix, and features stunning cloisonné enamel decoration that is expertly contrasted by an ebonised wood backing. The cross is centred by a budded panel, that features four blooming flowers wrapped within their vines in a heart-esque pattern. These designs are bordered by a red and gilt geometric surround, which provides an interesting contrast to the more flowing linearity within. Similar flower-and-vine motifs, as well as similar geometric bordering, adorn the rest of the cross’s main body. The colour contrasts within the cloisonné enamel are particularly pleasing, with the pale-yellow ground making the bright hues of the foliate decoration stand out. At the bottom of the cross sits a font, or stoup, originally designed to hold holy water. The font is also decorated with cloisonné enamel, but employs a geometric layered design in differing shades. A Palace Size Pair of Chinese Cloisonné Models of the Tigers on Original Wood Bases, Life Size. A pair of life-size Chinese cloisonné models of tigers, each presented in a striding pose with open mouths, revealing detailed teeth and red enamel tongues. The bodies are decorated with alternating bands of yellow and black, outlined with wirework that defines scrolling cloud-like motifs across the surface. Their muscular forms are supported on rectangular tiered wooden bases carved with decorative friezes. The tails curve outward, echoing the fluidity of the cloisonné design that continues throughout their bodies, including the paws and ears. In Chinese symbolism, these tigers represents the masculine principle in nature and is king of all the animals, as shown by the four stripes on his forehead, which form the character Wang (王). The tiger represents the greatest earthly power, as well as protection over human life. The decoration is executed in traditional cloisonné technique, where copper wire partitions contain colored enamel filled into the tiger’s stripes and background ornamentation. The yellow enamel ground is filled with fine spirals and scrolls that extend across the surface, contrasting with the black bands, which are similarly detailed with wire-drawn motifs. The white enamel underbellies are also worked with scroll patterns, and the noses are rendered in dotted black cloisonné.
