About the Item

Signed lithographic woodblock print by Kenji (Ken) Kusaka. Mr. Kusaka's work is in the collections of important collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The British Museum and The Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Kenji Kusaka was born in 1936 in Tsuyama, Okayama prefecture. He studied printmaking under Nagare Koji and uses the traditional woodblock printing technique for his bold compositions. In the 1960's, he garnered an international reputation by exhibiting in several of the Print Biennials in Tokyo, Lubjlana, Sao Paulo Florence and Xylon, winning several prestigious awards. Kusaka's art prints are characterized by usually abstract or semi-abstract forms in bold colors with strong hues and intensive use of perspective and gradation, achieving the effect of "deep space". Favorite elements used by the artist are egg shapes and cloud forms. The British museum describes his style and technique as typical for the post-war generation of Japanese woodblock artists like Kurosaki Akira, Amano Kazumi and Amano Kunihiro.
