About Rolf Escher
Despite meticulous descriptions of details, Escher's realism goes far beyond what is merely visible.
He links metaphysical questions about time and transience, with decaying objects describing current existential situations and human behavior.
Escher's "human spaces without people" only indirectly manifest the fate of their users, because objects only come into being as "the legacy of an absent presence."
Facades, archways, staircases, stairwells, old libraries and special furniture tell of the traces and wounds of their use.
With graphically subtle modeling in powerful, sometimes painterly light-dark contrasts, Escher sometimes builds oppressive imaginary scenes of the interiors of civilization, but in their state of being lost he only shows a stage, because "not death, but dying, not the end, but the end is the theme of this art"
