Signed Mick Rock “David Bowie, Beverly Hills Hotel. 1972" Magnum Print, 2019

About the Item

For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print of David Bowie by the legendary MICK ROCK. Titled "David Bowie, Beverly Hills Hotel. 1972", this Magnum print was a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed in black ink by the artist on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: “It was David’s first tour of the U.S. in autumn of 1972, and we were staying at The Beverly Hills Hotel. It was an afternoon, and I was taking a few snaps of the hotel grounds, when out of nowhere, David popped up. ‘What about me, Mick?’ he laughed. So of course, I took a bunch of photos. David really liked the results, especially this one. ‘I look like a stick insect,’ he joked. You never know when magic is going to pop into your lens.” Mick Rock Mick Rock (1948–2021) wasn’t just a photographer — he was the man who shot the seventies, the visual poet of glam rock’s wildest moments. With a camera in one hand and a backstage pass to music history in the other, he captured the raw, electric energy of legends like David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, and Syd Barrett. His portraits weren’t just photos — they were portals into the mythos of rock ’n’ roll, dripping with style, swagger, and surreal intimacy. Rock had a way of turning fleeting backstage chaos into timeless iconography, crafting the visual language of rebellion, glitter, and eyeliner. From Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era to the haunting beauty of Barrett, his work defined the look of an entire cultural movement. More than a documentarian, Mick Rock was a collaborator in legend-building, and his legacy still pulses through every flashbulb aimed at a stage today.
