About the Item
Late 19th-Century Black Forest Hand-Carved Walnut Plaque with Quails, Signed Lejaar, France, 1880. Hand-carved in France, this highly collectible wall hanging piece depicts wild quails with their young amongst a period-appropriate Black Forest background. The art of Black Forest craftsmanship dates back to the early 1800s region of Brienz, Switzerland, where local artisans used their resources such as linden, maple, and walnut woods to portray naturalistic scenes inspired by the abundance of wildlife. Signed and dated "Lejaar" to bottom right, this rare and monumental piece is one of the finest examples of the Black Forest technique.
