In the legend of Bacchus and Ariadne, the god Bacchus (Dionysus in Greek mythology) falls in love with Ariadne, a princess who has been abandoned on the island of Naxos by her lover, Theseus. Bacchus, initially seen as a figure of riotous bacchanalia, is captivated by Ariadne's beauty and the despair she faces.
