Hand Carved Wall Panel in Walnut
About the Item
On a road trip from LA to Seattle, while passing through a small village on the Oregon coast, my fiance and I decided to stop by the Salishan Lodge to view the architecture and the artwork of Leroy Setziol. The lodge was beautiful, however the wall mounted sculptures were life changing.
Working from local PNW woods, mostly walnut, Leroy carved panels by hand guided mostly by his intuition and inspired by the natural world around him. I was so struck by these works that by the time we returned to the studio three weeks later my head was full of ideas for a carving. I immediately took to assembling a panel of black walnut off cuts and went to work. Thus began a series of works that is ongoing to this day. I make sketches in my notebook when inspiration strikes; usually while out in nature. Then compile those sketches into a comprehensive body that is essentially a narrative etched in the grain of local hardwoods, usually black walnut.
This particular piece is inspired by coastal scenery here in Southern California. The sun, the mountains, chaparral, and of course the emerald Pacific waters. My attempt with this piece was to convey the interaction of the each element; to communicate the dance that is performed between them.

West of Noble
West of Noble is a Los Angeles based design practice dedicated to the pursuit of making wooden furniture by hand. It was founded by designer and itinerant woodworker Greg Mitchell in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in 2011, but is inspired by a lifetime of travel, time spent on the sea, various odd jobs, wooden sailboats, and friends and family; without whom the company would not exist. Our designs are guided by the making process, and the unpredictable nature of our chosen material. We aim for the simplest line in each piece, believing it is only finished when there is nothing left to take away.

Beachcomber Counter Stool in Walnut
By Greg Mitchell
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Light and strong, the Beachcomber Counter Stool evokes the sight of an old wooden single hull; it's lean, sturdy mast together with the rigging worthy of the high seas. Constructed of hand shaped legs and stretchers, each piece is carefully fit and pinned with hardwood pegs and wedges to last for generations, much like the sea craft that inspire them.
For every bar stool, we start with scrupulously chosen lumber; each board must consist of straight grain and have absolutely no defects. This is not just for aesthetics, the clear grain gives the stool its strength. The boards are then milled to dimension and shaped by hand using a combination of machines and time honored hand tools. They are then given a polish by taking thin shavings with well sharpened planes and spokeshaves; rarely is sandpaper used in our shop. Once assembled, the Beachcomber bar stool...
