Magic Tree Sculpture by William Bowie, 1960s

About the Item

William Bowie (1926–1994) was a pioneering sculptor based in New York City, active from 1954 until 1994. He is best known for his striking metal sculptures, often crafted from welded steel nails and finished with gold leaf. A key figure in mid-century American metal sculpture, Bowie embraced industrial materials to create works of raw, expressive beauty, aligning with the Brutalist movement of the era. His innovative approach earned him widespread recognition, including the 1965 Purchase Prize from the Butler Institute of American Art and the 1966 Symposium '66 Good Design Award for Outstanding Merit in Craftsmanship from Artist-Craftsman of New York. This Magic Tree sculpture exemplifies Bowie's signature style, transforming industrial elements into an organic, dynamic composition that captures both strength and delicacy. A rare and collectible piece, it stands as a testament to Bowie's mastery of form and material. Dimensions: 71 cm x 64 cm
