Pair of 19th Century French Barbotine Ceramic Chargers with King Francois I
About the Item
This colorful pair of antique Majolica platters were sculpted in France, circa 1850. Both plates, decorated in the Renaissance style, are heavily sculpted on the perimeter with overlaid leaf decor. The plates depict Francois I, King of France, and his second wife, Eleanor of Austria. The wall platters are in excellent condition with rich colors in a deep blue and pale green palette.
Francois I (1494-1547) was the first king of France from the house of Valois, reigning from 1515 until his death. He was the son of Charles, count of Angoulême and Louise de Savoy He succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII, who died without a heir.
