About the Item

This superb deep relief carved hardwood Raj period Indian wall panel has its original hardwood carved frame. It is an interesting and special piece. Deeply hand carved from a single piece of rich dense timber approximately 9cm thick. It shows an interesting scene of an oxen train transporting people and commodities. At the bottom, there is a harnessed cart being pulled by a pair of oxen with three people riding on board the two wheeled cart along a mountainous track and above there are two single lead oxen both carrying provisions and one with a seated passenger. The three dimensional view created by the artist Carver is most impressive. The framed panel is in very good condition and has a rich patination and age related colour and would be a very eye catching addition to any wall. A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910
Located in Central England, GB
A fine Indian Raj period carved soapstone study of a large elephant carrying two Maharajas and their guide seated high on its back in an elaborate carriage surrounded by a group of young elephants. This superb carving shows great skill from the highly proficient craftsman who has deeply carved and pierced the study with three dimensional detailing. And just to make his work more difficult the body of the large elephant is hollow carved and pierced with a small perfectly carved study of another elephant at its centre which is incredibly difficult to achieve working through the tight delicately carved and pierced scrolls which form its body. Indian, circa 1910 Height 21cm x width 11cm x depth 9cm Thank you for looking at this unusual hand carved soapstone elephant...

An Indian Raj period carved figure of the Goddess Parvati, circa 1900
Located in Central England, GB
This superb hand carved sandalwood figure is Indian from the Raj period and dates to circa 1900. It depicts the Hindu goddess Parvati, who represents love, fertility and devotion. Parvati is beautiful. She is semi-naked and very ornate in her elaborate costume. She is holding her Deity son Ganesha, who is part human with an elephant’s head and is known in Hindu mythology as the remover of obstacles. This remarkable figure group is carved from solid sandalwood, the very material that Hindu mythology suggests Parvati made her son Ganesha from. The figure group is exceptionally well carved equal to what could be described in European circles as exhibition quality. The finely carved figure is raised and mounted onto an elaborate carved and moulded stepped stand made from matching figured sandalwood. This very fine piece of Hindu art...
