Set of Eight Late 19th Century Framed Herbarium Specimens
About the Item
This charming collection of eight framed herbarium specimens offers a rare glimpse into late 19th-century Kansas flora. Collected in 1894 by John Flickinger, a student at Emporia High School, these delicate botanical studies were gathered from the fields around Emporia and Plymouth. Each specimen is carefully pressed and mounted on its original paper, some meticulously labeled with the Latin scientific names, while others remain blank. We've preserved their historic character while giving them a fresh presentation, floating each sheet on a beige silk backing and setting them into custom walnut gallery frames. The raked finish of the frames highlights the wood's rich grain, creating a handsome contrast to the fragile, timeworn pages. Whether hung together as a grid or scattered throughout a space, these pieces bring an authentic sense of discovery, learning, and the quiet beauty of the prairie landscape into your home—history, nature, and art all woven together.
