About the Item
Umetaro Azechi "Three Men on Mountain" Abstract Woodcut Monoprint
A colorful framed abstract woodcut monoprint by well-known Japanese printmaker Umetaro Azechi (1902-1999). He was best known for his depictions of mountain landscapes and mountaineers. This piece is a striking example of his work. "Three Men on Mountain" is titled in Japanese lower left, dated ("-55") lower center, and pencil-signed lower right. It is framed in its original giltwood frame.
Azechi was born in 1902 to a poor farming family in what is now Uwajima, Ehime. Azechi had an unwavering and lifelong passion for art, despite his difficult circumstances. Early on, he enrolled in an art correspondence course, which helped him polish his craft. By 1925, he moved to Tokyo to work for a printing company. There, Azechi's prints were noticed by prominent sosaku-hanga (Creative Prints) artist Un'ichi Hiratsuka, who facilitated exhibitions at the Japan Print Association and the Kokugakai Arts Association. By the late 1940s, Azechi had developed a distinctive style, depicting mountainous landscapes with simplified forms and large areas of flat color.
Azechi gained international recognition by exhibiting in group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including the Sao Paulo Art Biennial in 1953, the Lugano International Print Biennial in 1956, and the International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo in 1957. The Umetaro Azechi Memorial Museum opened in Uwajima in 2003. His work can be found in major museum collections such as the Achenbach Foundation in San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and The British Museum in London.
