About the Item
Puppy Sleeping on Pillow Pastel on Paper, Framed under Glass
A tender and finely executed 19th-century pastel portrait of a sleeping puppy nestled on a red tasseled pillow. The work’s sensitive handling of animal anatomy, expressive charm, and warmth echo the sentimental animal studies associated with Susan Catherine Moore Waters (1823–1900), although this particular piece is confidently attributed to Miss A. Hurd, based on a partially retained inscription on the reverse.
The handwritten note on the back reads:
“Painted by Miss A. Hurd, Bridgeport, Conn., For Sale at the Metropolitan H…” — suggesting the work may have been exhibited or sold at a venue such as the Metropolitan Hotel or a metropolitan art exhibition in New York City.
The artist remains largely undocumented, but the level of skill and refinement suggests a professionally trained hand active during the mid-to-late 19th century.
Dimensions:
Sight: 12" H × 15.75" W
Frame: 21.5" H × 25.5" W
Condition:
Good/Fair. Some fading and minor discoloration in the black background. The puppy and pillow remain vibrantly intact. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance:
From the Collection of Charlene Marshall, New York City, a noted collector of 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings, folk art, and decorative objects. Her collection emphasized expressive realism and personal narratives, often focusing on works by lesser-known or underrecognized women artists of the period.

English Late 19th Century Vertical Oil Painting of a Dog Sitting in an Armchair
Located in Atlanta, GA
An English late 19th century oil painting of a dog sitting in an armchair with red cushion in giltwood frame. This exquisite animal painting features a short hair caramel colored dog, majestically sitting in a chair, in a manner reminiscent of Velasquez' depiction of Pope Innocent X. A red cushion, whose deep tones contrast beautifully with the dog's coat, assures us that the dog is very comfortable! Dog portraits became popular during the 18th century among the hunting aristocracy, and the establishment of The Kennel Club in 1873, further encouraged their popularity. This portrait is a perfect example of this trend. Set inside a lovely giltwood frame, this vertical format English dog portrait...
