About the Item

Workshop of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore, 1488/90 - Venice, 1576) Holy Family with San Giovannino Measures: Oil on canvas, 79 x 103 cm - with frame 95.5 x 119.5 cm This painting derives from an invention by Titian, setting itself according to a descriptive lyricism that also recurs in the Rest on the Flight into Egypt performed by the artist at a young age and from the Contini Bonaccossi collection in Florence, but today in Longleat House, Warminster. The comparisons that make it possible to attribute the canvas in question to the same Titian workshop, as they are more stringent with the subjects presented, consist of the Sacred Conversation of the Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool and of the Frederick Mont & Newhouse Galleries of New York; both canvases vary from each other in the choice of landscape details and in the Child who, unlike the present, does not reach out towards St. Joseph but sits at rest on his mother's lap. A third canvas, depicting the Madonna with Child and San Giovannino and strictly similar to the present one, is instead considered by a small part of the critics to be undoubtedly autographed; preserved at the National Gallery of Art in Mellon, it was received here in 1937 after being deposited in the London collection. The Titianesque Madonna with Child in the National Gallery of London (1510) depicts an identical Madonna, identical to the present in the soft reclining of the head and in the whiteness of the skin; St. Joseph is instead rendered with the weight of the body resting on the opposite arm. The painting with the Madonna and Child, the Baptist and a donor (1514, National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, coming from a deposit of the Earl of Ellesmere) instead offers the trampling Child Jesus himself, wrapped in pearly cloth. Immediate echoes of Titian's production can also be seen in a painting by Bonifacio Veronese (1487-1553), who studied at Palma il Vecchio but was largely influenced by Titian and Giorgione (Sacra Conversazione, today Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan), with the same Child that kicks, as well as a painting made by a Titian follower of the same subject, now in a private collection, which keeps Mary and Child equal but adds donors.
