About the Item

Decorate a living or dining room with this large antique French pastoral painting. Created circa 1780 and inspired by the works of François Boucher (1703–1770), the celebrated court painter to Louis XV, the oil on canvas captures the idyllic charm and gentle sensuality of Rococo art. The composition depicts a lively harvest scene, where a group of peasants gathers beneath a pear tree in full bloom. Three young women in flowing 18th-century attire collect fruit in baskets while a man ascends a ladder to pluck ripe pears from above, and another figure tends the nearby garden with a watering can. Rendered with Boucher’s characteristic lightness of touch and romantic palette, the scene blends refinement with rustic grace. The figures are softly modeled with luminous skin tones and graceful gestures, set within a verdant landscape suffused with golden light. Every detail, from the folds of the women’s dresses to the dappled foliage, reflects the artist’s mastery of elegance and atmosphere. The work beautifully captures the Rococo spirit of leisure, nature, and pastoral poetry that Boucher made famous in his fêtes galantes and mythological idylls. Presented in its original walnut frame, later enriched with a wide carved gilt trim featuring acanthus leaf and bead-and-reel motifs, the painting retains its grandeur and period authenticity. Over four feet in height, it makes a striking focal point in any refined interior. The canvas remains in excellent condition commensurate with age, with gentle craquelure and a rich surface patina enhancing its timeless character. Measures: 35.75" W x 48.75" H
