About the Item

An Incredible 19th Century Orientalist Oil on Canvas 'Prince and Princess in the Harem" signed by Antonio Rivas. Antonio Rivas (1845–1911) was a Spanish painter active in Rome, known for his Orientalist and historical genre paintings. Born in Seville, he trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes before moving to Italy, where he established himself as a painter of highly detailed and elaborate compositions. His works often depicted scenes inspired by North African and Middle Eastern settings, catering to the European fascination with exoticism in the late 19th century. Rivas exhibited at major European salons and was recognized for his meticulous attention to textiles, architecture, and decorative elements. Many of his works were commissioned for collectors in France and Italy, and his paintings are held in both private and institutional collections. The painting is signed on the right hand lower side. The composition depicts a reclining woman on a cushioned divan, wearing a flowing translucent garment adorned with floral embroidery, gold jewelry, and a decorative headdress with beads and pendants. She holds a round hand mirror with a gilt frame in her extended left hand. A small inlaid wooden table with cabriole legs stands in front of her, supporting an open jewelry box filled with rings, bracelets, and other gold adornments. The floor beneath the table features a multicolored rug with geometric patterns, bordered by a brass vessel and a potted palm plant. The background consists of a large textile or painted wall covering with a mottled gold and brown finish, bordered by a section of geometric and floral patterned tiles in blue, yellow, and white. To the right of the reclining figure, a man in a red robe with embroidered trim lies against a blue cushion, resting on his elbow. He wears a white turban and holds the mouthpiece of a long hose attached to a metal hookah resting on a brass tray on the floor. The hookah features a bulbous lower chamber with decorative engraving and a tall, fluted neck. A recessed niche with a small ceramic vessel is visible in the tiled wall behind him. The floor is scattered with small pink and white petals. The painting is executed with fine detailing and a controlled palette, emphasizing contrast between the rich colors of the textiles and the subdued tones of the architectural elements.
