19th Century French Monk Oil Painting in Gilt Frame Signed J. Bastet, 1894

About the Item

Over six feet tall, this important oil on canvas painting by Jean Tancrede Bastet (1858-1942), was exposed at the Paris Salon in 1894 (see copy of catalog); titled "Meditation Monastere de la Grande Chartreuse", it depicts a Carthusian monk in white cassock seating at a table in his monastery cell and meditating while reading the Bible. The cell is filled with interesting details including a bust of Saint Bruno, a portrait of the apostle Paul, a crucifix on the wall over inscription "O Beata Solitudo, O Sola Beatitudo", which means "O blessed solitude, O sole happiness", meaning "loneliness leads to holiness". The scene of this monk in meditation brings great emotion when you share this moment of faith with him. There are also a statue of the Virgin Mary standing on the rustic table beside a cardboard, a basket full of thorns, a crucifix on a wall, a painting of the Virgin Mary. The painting is in excellent condition with wonderful colors including the light piercing thru a small window in the top left corner, and is set in a carved giltwood frame called Degas style. The last picture shows the certificate of provenance. Signed on the lower right corner by the artist J. Bastet 1894. Listed in the Benezit. Saint Bruno the Carthusian (1030-1101), was the founder of the Chartreux or Carthusian order; the Carthusian Order is a Catholic religious order of enclosed monastics. The order was founded by Bruno of Cologne in 1084 and includes both monks and nuns. The order has its own Rule, called the Statutes, rather than the Rule of Saint Benedict, and combines eremitical and cenobitic monasticism. The name Carthusian is derived from the Chartreuse Mountains in the French Alps: Saint Bruno built his first hermitage in a valley of these mountains. Jean Tancrede Bastet was a French painter born in Domene in 1858 and died in Grenoble in 1942. He went to the Beaux Arts School in Grenoble and was a student of Aime Charles Irvoy. He then studied in Paris under Cabanel and was admitted to compete in 1885 for the Rome contest. He traveled everywhere including in North Africa and India. Measures: 60" W x 73.5" H.
