19th Century Hand-Painted Porcelain Plaque, "Flora" after Titian Signed by Rau

About the Item

Antique hand-painted porcelain plaque, "Flora" after Titian signed by Rau. This beautifully executed 19th century porcelain plaque has been hand-painted with a luminous version of Renaissance painter Tiziano Vecellio's famous oil painting, "Flora". Titian finished his masterpiece in the early 16th century and today it can be seen displayed in Florence's Uffizi Gallery. The subject of this piece depicts an idealized version of a brown-eyed young woman with creamy skin and wavy golden brown hair which cascades down over her left shoulder. Flora is attired in a loosely fitted ivory gown and rose colored wrap, both of which have slipped off one shoulder to reveal a wide expanse of flawless skin. The young woman glances off to her right with an enigmatic expression while holding a small bouquet made up of soft pink roses and a blue forget-me-not in her hand. The overall visual effect is arresting. The porcelain plaque is housed in a period wood frame that has been gilded. The frame itself features an ornate dimensional foliate design with beaded details at the inner rim. The subtle reddish-gold variations in color complement the warm tones found in the painting itself. The porcelain plaque is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or scratches and bears the signature of the artist Rau at the lower left. The plaque does not bear a maker's mark, but Christies and Bonhams have both sold KPM plaques of similar quality painted by an artist named Rau. The wood frame is in original unrestored condition and has some areas of material loss at the upper left and lower right corners. It should be noted that the plaque has been securely housed within the frame, and has been fitted with two protective bumpers at the lower corners. The piece is ready to hang upon receipt. The visual portion of the plaque is 4.5" by 7" and the frame itself is 8.5" by 11.5". This exceptionally fine artwork is sure to be noticed wherever it is displayed. A striking find!

  • 19th Century Minton’s Art Pottery Studio Kensington Gore Hand-Painted Charger
    By Minton
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. The scene includes multiple colors and textures and features a cherubic toddler seated upon a bed alongside a young girl standing on a blue footstool...
