19th century Whaling Panorama, circa 1890, an oil on canvas view of whaling in the South Seas, with six boats lowered and three sperm whales in a flurry, three boats in peril and a close-up view of the whalemen. The painting is unusual in having both an American Bark and a Dutch Ship, so much activity in detail, and the great hovering flock of seabirds. The painting is unsigned, is not mounted on a stretcher and is conserved inside a new frame. The painting is in extremely fine condition, with very few small scuffs or scrapes to the paint. This is a very scarce subject to find in such a dramatic size, with this age and quality, and with such strong Folk Art appeal. The painting comes from an old Nantucket collection, and hung in Capt. Toby’s on Nantucket Harbor for over half a century. Measures: Image: 19 ¾ in H x 47in W Framed: 24 5/8 in H x 52 ¼ in W.
