20th Century Italian Landscape by Savino Labò Venetian River Channel Landscape

About the Item

Oil on canvas Italian landscape dating back to 1960s circa depicting a ri ver channel of Veneto region with a house and three boats. Signed at the bottom left Labò by the artist of Milanes origin Savino Labò (1899-1976). Further signature on the back. Very good condition. Wear consistent with age and use. It comes from a Milanese paintings collection. The Italian painter, set designer and decorator Savino Labò (Milan 1899-1976) studied at the Brera Academy under the guidance of A. Alciati. In 1921 at the II Autumn Exhibition of the Friends of Art in Varese, he distinguished himself with the work Alba, of naturalistic origin and influenced by the Lombard lighting tradition of the late 19th century. Two years later he participated in the Exhibition of competitions of the Brera Academy held at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan. His art was influenced by his travels in France; in Paris in 1927 he participated with four paintings in the Exposition des artistes milanais (bibl.La Revue moderne des arts et de la vie, March 15, 1927, in De Grada, p. 258). By enriching the post-impressionist language with twentieth-century characters and Chiarist inflections, he began an illustrative painting of bright colors, functional to the specific requests of the client. From 1930 he participated in the Milanese exhibitions of the Society for fine arts and permanent exhibition, of which he became a member, obtaining significant awards such as the Sallustio Fornara prize at the Spring of 1938 (Lombard country, 1937: now exhibited at the Gallery of modern art, Milan) ; while he arrived at the final selection in the national competition "Portraits of gold medals", launched in 1935 by Queen Margherita to commemorate the heroes of the war of 1915-18, with the painting depicting the soldier Roberto Cozzi (Rome, Museo del Risorgimento), which was chosen for the Galleria della Vittoria in Rome. His first theatrical collaboration with La Scala dates back to the early 1930s, in 1933 he created sketches and scenes for the second act of Giuseppe's Aida. Verdi and the following year participated in the staging of Donizetti's Favorita. He started a long-lasting co-operation with the La Scala theater, creating sketches, scenes and sets for the Symphonic Ballets of La Scala in 1941 and 1942 for Puccini's Turandot. For Verdi's Trovatore (1943) and Puccini's Madama Butterfly (1944); the sketches for the Harlequin by F. Busoni (1943-44); the scenes for the Mona Lisa by A. Ponchielli, performed in 1945 and 1947; the sketches and scenographies of Carmen by G. Bizet (1946 and 1947); the staging for the ballet The three-pointed hat by M. De Falla (1948). The last collaboration was with the Arena of Verona, for which he designed the scenography of Verdi's Forza del Destinato in 1950-51. Participation in the Venice Biennials in 1940 and 1942 and in the Bergamo third prize in 1941 (Landscape: Lake Maggiore, formerly in Brescia, Bignetti collection, reprized in The Bergamo Prize, p. 221) marked the professional achievement of the Labò. Present for the third and last time at the Venetian exhibition in 1948, after 1953 he began to participate in the National Biennial of Milan and came into contact with the Bagutta artists. With them he exhibited in 1949, in 1952 at the press club in Turin and Milan and in 1958 at the Baguttino gallery in Milan. At the same time, he was teacher for seven years at the Civic School of Applied Art at the Castello Sforzesco (1943-49), for seven years he was a teacher of drawing at the Brera Academy, where he remained until a few years before his death. The panels by him from 1950 for the Savini restaurant in Milan, the paintings from 1955 (Old Naples, Venetian eighteenth century) for the La mask restaurant in London are well known. His painting, Landscape 1959 is exhibited in Milan, Modern Art Gallery. In latest decades he paints religious themes, see the painting Gesù guarisce il paralitico donated to the Vatican Museums and portrait painting, as evidenced by the five portraits of benefactors exhibited at the Maggiore hospital in Milan. Early 18th century Italian Venetian inland painting, a large size oil on canvas Baroque mountain landscape with stream, bridge, waterfall, wayfarers and a village in the background. The woodland is animated by figures, a caravan with horsemen fishermen. The iconographic inspiration of this wooded representation seems to be in the large trunk of the withered conifer in a central position, which represents a dead tree, as a? reminder of the transience of everything in life, whose phases are summarized in the two mountainous coasts. In the background a village painted in light and soft blue colors, in stark contrast to the previous scene, seems to reassure and project us into a future season. With a suggestive theatrical effect, more than 250 cm wide, this Baroque Italian painting comes from a private collection of Milan, the canvas has been lined and shows minor painting retouches at a horizontal seam of the canvas.
