“Abduction of Roxelana-future wife of Sultan Suleiman” Oil on Canvas ca 1680
About the Item
This an absolutely magnificent unique 17th century painting illustrates pirates in the time of Barbary Slave Trade (European slaves were acquired by Barbary pirates in slave raids on ships and by raids on coastal towns to the Netherlands, Ireland and the southwest of Britain, as far north as Iceland and into the Eastern Mediterranean..) abducting famous Roxelana-the first wife of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, the first enslaved court “favourite” to be manumitted, the first wife allowed to bear multiple sons, and the first to act as an advisor to the Sultan. Roxelana was likely born in modern-day Ukraine.
The colours of the painting are fantastic and very atmospheric. On the back of the painting there are couple of pirates slave ships, these were ships used to carry enslaved people.
Masterfully done painting which carries an important historical meaning as well as being fabulous art work by itself. Most likely Dutch school.
