After Peter Paul Rubens, Honeysuckle bower, dated 1929. Oil on canvas. Good original condition. Signature: "A. Dill cop. [copy] 1929“ Provenance: A manor house in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. The artwork: The double portrait "Rubens and Isabella Brant in the honeysuckle bower" or short "The honeysuckle bower" is a Baroque oil painting by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, which was painted around 1609. It depicts the artist and his then fiancée Isabella Brant (1591-1626) sitting close together in the open air as a couple of lovers. The picture, which was painted near Antwerp, is painted with oil paints on canvas and mounted on oakwood. Rubens probably painted the picture as a wedding present for his mother-in-law, an Antwerp Patrician. The wedding took place on 3 October 1609 in St Michael's Church in Antwerp, Brant was Rubens' first wife. The painting with the inventory no. 334 hangs in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany in the Rubens Hall on the 1st floor as part of the permanent exhibition. The artist: Peter Paul Rubens (born 28 June 1577 in Siegen, Germany, died 30 May 1640 in Antwerp, Spanish Netherlands) is a Flemish Baroque painter. He is regarded as the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens' artistic compositions refer to scholarly aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and extremely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, color, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic art style of the Counter-Reformation. Rubens specialized in altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and historical paintings with mythological and allegorical motifs. Rubens not only ran a large studio in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobles and art collectors throughout Europe, but was also a classically trained humanist scholar and diplomat knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. Rubens was a productive artist: the catalogue of his works contains 1,403 works that can be directly attributed to him. His commissioned works were mostly history paintings, which included religious and mythological themes, as well as hunting scenes. He painted portraits, especially of friends, and self-portraits, and in later years he painted several landscapes. Rubens designed tapestries and prints as well as his own house. His drawings are very vivid and without much detail. He also used oil sketches as preliminary studies. He was one of the last great artists to consistently use wooden panels as a carrier material, even for very large works.
