About the Item

The Alchemist. Oil on canvas. Flemish school, 18th century. Interior scene in which, in the foreground, a man of a certain age, richly dressed, is presented, holding a flask in the light while consulting a book. On the table next to him, more volumes appear, and more bottles of different shapes in this area. Towards the bottom of the painting, more characters can be seen, in different attitudes, and more vessels appear throughout the composition. The theme of the painting is clear both from those jars and containers as well as from the clothing of the aforementioned character. Likewise, it can be compared with one entitled Trouble comes to the Alchemist, from the 17th century, in which similarities can be seen, saving the point of humor that this oil painting preserved in the Science Institute of Philadelphia (United States) has. Stylistically, it is part of what is usual in the Flemish school both at the time and from earlier dates. An interior scene is shown in the work Smokers and Drinkers by David Teniers in the Prado Museum in Madrid, or in the one entitled The Alchemist, by the same painter and in the same museum. Adriaen Brouwer also has works of tavern interiors with elements in common with this one.
