"Athena and Her Acolytes," Extraordinary Art Deco Painting, 1925

About
Painted by Homer Eddins, a Texan artist in his final year at Columbia University, this extraordinary and fantastical painting depicts a helmeted Athena crowned with a large aureole surrounded by her acolytes, at least one too overwhelmed to gaze directly at her. Eddins was an active contributor to the Jester, the oldest collegiate humor magazine in America, providing cartoons and illustrations along with Lynd Ward, who later became famous for his prints and book illustrations. This painting, executed in Eddins' final year at Columbia, seems to depict his fellow students, all in splendid Art Deco robes, surrounding the patron goddess of wisdom, universities and the arts.
