About
Bold and arresting, and painted at the height of the Art Deco period with many of the era's most characteristic decorative flourishes, this gouache by Cesare Bentivoglio depicts a king or prince on horseback, attended by a huntsman with crossbow, looking for birds to capture. The artist has richly finished the dress of the two figures with chevrons, zigzag patterns, undulating curves and circles, all in a bold palette of tangerine, cobalt, canary and gold. A tree to the right is drooping earthward in a stylized manner, and three Art Deco birds fly overhead. Bentivoglio painted fairly conventional landscapes for much of his life, but between 1925 and 1930 he painted a series of figurative scenes, like this, each of which explored mythological or legendary events, and all expressed in a strong palette. The painting is gouache on artist board and signed in the lower right.
