“Castillian still life” (“Bodegón castellano”). Oil on canvas. Vela Zanetti, José (Milagros, Burgos, 1913-Burgos, 1999). Signed and dated (lower right corner; 1972). Publication: Cremer, Victoriano. “The book of Vela Zanetti”. Ibérico Europea de Ediciones, SA; 1974. Page 13 (illustration). José Vela Zanetti was a Spanish painter. He began his training in León with a drawing teacher from the Institute where he was, Lucas Pérez Morales, later deepening his studies in Madrid (visiting museums and galleries). He then returned to León, and, thanks apparently to Bartolomé Cossío, began as an apprentice and disciple of the painter José Ramón Zaragoza, maintaining contact with Cossío. He was also granted a scholarship by the Provincial Council of León in 1933 to go to Italy. He was in America between 1939 and 1960, working on more than one hundred murals and other works in the Dominican Republic, where he lived for more than ten years; he founded and directed the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo; He visited Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia and the United States of America. In 1985 he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. In 1987 the patronage of the Foundation that bears his name was created in León, with a museum in where there is an important part of his production. In general terms, his style went from a crude classicism of Italian influence (especially in his American era) to a more expressionist and symbolic figurativism that was enriched, already in Spain, according to the theme it became more local and precise (numerous experts point out that his maturity can be considered as an important part of Castilian social painting of rural types, an important trend towards the middle of the 20th century). His work has been seen both in numerous exhibitions in Spain (in León was the first) and America, and in important institutions: he painted the mural given to the UN by the Dominican Republic (inaugurated in 1953 and entitled "Mankind's Struggle for Lasting Peace" ); murals of historical theme for buildings of the Provincial Council of Burgos; etc. Likewise, his paintings are shown in private collections as well as museums and other places (Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum in Madrid, Venetian Zanetti Museum, Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, Guggenheim Museum in New York, Parador de San Marcos León, Bellapart Museum, Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, etc.). • Size: 89 x 130 cms.
