"The Cloud, " Spectacular Triptych Painting Inspired by Shelley Poem, 1959

About the Item

A cross between a drawing by William Blake from the late 18th century and a psychedelic painting from the late 1960s, this fever dream of a painting dates from 1959, and was inspired by Shelley's Classic Romantic poem, "The Cloud." Here, the painter, Milton Bond, attempts to capture the many moods and actions of the clouds, as Shelley says so beautifully: From my wings are shaken the dews that waken. The sweet buds every one. When rocked to rest on their mother's breast. As she dances about the sun. Bond was an important Rochester, New York painter, and taught for years at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He became fascinated with the physical and spiritual qualities of crystals, incorporating them into his painting and imbuing them with a spiritual, mystical quality. This painting was a major entry in an exhibition hosted by the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery in 1959.
