Enamel Plaque Depicting Napoleon Crossing the Alps, by Camille Fauré, circa 1930

About the Item

An enamel plaque depicting Napoleon crossing the Alps, by Camille Fauré, Limoges. French, circa 1930. Signed 'FAURÉ, Limoges France. No. 1/8'. This very decorative domed enamel plaque depicts Napoleon crossing the Alps after the celebrated painting by Jacques-Louis David, painted in 1801 and now at Malmaison. The plaque is set within a moulded giltwood frame with a red velvet slip. Camille Fauré was a French enamel artist best known for his design work for the pottery company Limoges. Fauré’s use of floral and figurative patterning as well as richly glazed colors were hallmarks of his work. Born in 1872 in Periguex, France, he apprenticed for several years before producing his own designs. First establishing himself at the Au Vase Etrusque shop in Paris, he went on to exhibit at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. This exhibition famously gave rise to the term Art Deco. Fauré died in 1956 in Paris, France.
