Huge Gothic Art Painting from Holy Family by Lou Asperslagh in Stylish Oak Frame

About the Item

Great monastery attic find. Sometimes when there are not enough monks left to keep a monastery open, they close up forever and the works of religious art get sold. Via one of our contacts we were introduced to the person who purchased this giant painting from a monastery in Belgium a little over 10 years ago. We have sold a number of religious paintings before, but never one of this size. The enormous size however is not the only thing that makes this work of art impressive. This particular antique was all hand painted by master craftsman Lou Asperslagh. The more knowledgeable collector will know that what sets the master painters apart from the non-great are the quality of the hands and faces, but also their ability to work with light. And Lou Asperslagh was very much respected for being very good at both. In this painting the halo surrounded faces of Josef, Mary and the young boy Jesus are divine and the hands too are of superb quality. Other than most religious paintings this extra large specimen also is relatively light and the scene very much endearing and lovable. It does not show really well in our photos, but this painting has a warmness to it that is unlike anything we have ever seen. In the right space it will create a unique atmosphere, in a way like no modern painting ever could. This Christian painting also holds various symbolic elements and we are quite sure that this is a biblical scene, but we lack the knowledge to know which one. If you do and if you already have a space in mind for it then maybe you should be its next custodian. This striking and impressive work of religious art is painted on a solid oak panel and it is signed and dated (1933) in the bottom left corner. This unique painting is a absolute joy to look at and can only be described as great value for money. Louis (Lou) Franciscus Asperslagh was a Dutch graphic artist, glazier, painter, draftsman, etcher and poet. Asperslagh started his education with painter Jan Schouten in Delft and then studied at the academy of Delft, where he was taught by JAN TOOROP (1858-1928). He was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts in the Hague and mostly known for his Christian religious scenes and a master in applying color and light variations.
