"Industry, " Art Deco Painting with Stylized Gears and Structure for Fortune Mag

About the Item

A brilliant example of Art Deco-era painting which celebrated American manufacturing with stylized images of gears and Industrial architecture, this gouache painting by Paolo Garretto was executed in 1933, no doubt as an unpublished maquette for the cover of Fortune magazine. Here, Garretto paints several large gears in Silhouette, superimposed over a series of Industrial structures broken down into their elemental parts -- chevrons, X-shaped reinforcing elements, and vertical struts or columns. Fortune magazine chose Garretto to create paintings for its covers on several occasions in 1932 and 1933, and so it is no surprise that the artist created maquettes -- such as this example -- for other covers as well, not always published. Garretto was born in Italy and studied architecture there -- clearly an advantage for this painting -- but spent most of his life doing graphic design in Turin, London, Paris and New York. The outbreak of World War II compelled him to return to Italy, but his refusal to cooperate with Fascist authorities landed him in prison. The painting is gouache on paper, and is signed on the matte. Garretto added a heartfelt inscription to a dear friend on the reverse in the 1970s. Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible painting is 6.75 inches high by 5.5 inches wide.

In the 1920s, archaeological expeditions led by Howard Carter and others in Egypt led to the discovery in 1922 of the treasure of Tutankhamun...
