"Leda and the Swan, " Important Painting by Rene Buthaud

About the Item

Like many of his contemporaries in the 1920s and 1930s, in both America and France, Buthaud was fascinated with figures from classic mythology. Leda and the Swan was a motif he returned to repeatedly, in both ceramics and painting. This very fine example shows Leda being seduced by Zeus, who took the form of a swan, the coupling producing two children: Helen and Polydeuces. Buthaud was one of the greatest artists that France produced in its Art Deco heyday, and is best known for his sculptural female nudes, usually produced in ceramic or porcelain. Painting is gouache or oil on paper. Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 19 inches high by 23 inches wide.
